Relay For Life Supports Cancer Research, Raises Funding Question
BY ERIN MAGUIRE, THE BULLETIN
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2009It’s that time of year when tents fill college campuses and community parks as people walk overnight to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS) through Relay for Life, the world’s largest fundraising event.
The Relay for Life is a walk-a-thon, typically 12- to 24-hours long, where teams raise money for research and services that support cancer patients and their families. Locally, events are scheduled from now through June, but some will choose not to participate because they deem the use of ACS funds as anti-life.
The University of Pennsylvania and Temple University will kick off their Relays for Life with events on Friday. Penn participants will walk around Franklin Field where registration runs from 7 to 8 p.m. Registration for Temple is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Student Pavilion. A full list of local Relay events are posted by zip code at www.cancer.org.
The Relay for Life consists of teams of between eight and 15 members, with the goal of keeping one person on the track at all times.
